Cornhusker State Games Preliminary Weekend Highlights
Lincoln (July 12, 2021)—The Cornhusker State Games preliminary weekend events took place over the weekend in Lincoln, Bellevue, Wahoo, Kearney, and Waverly. The 10 sports were: Electronic Darts, Team Bass Fishing, Ninja Challenge, Youth Indoor Volleyball, Adventure Race, Footgolf, HEMA Fencing, Plinking Pistol Shooting, Slow Pitch Softball, and Adult Indoor Volleyball. The bulk of events will take place July 16- 25.
Team Zip N Flip took home the gold in the Team Bass Fishing Tournament. The team of Miles Otte and Collin Maly reeled in an impressive 5-bass limit of 18.6 total pounds, with their biggest catch being a 6.16 lb. bass. The tournament, which began at 6 a.m. Friday at Lake Wanahoo near Wahoo, had a total of 38 boats in the competition.
The Adventure Race competition took place Saturday at Bowling Lake in Lincoln. A total of 76 participants took on the challenge of the adventure course. Logan Kampsnider of Lincoln claimed the gold in the individual race.
In the Ninja Challenge, held in Lincoln, competitors had to complete 10 different obstacles with the goal of hitting the buzzer, signifying you have completed the challenge. In the Male Amateur division, Nick VanderWal of Omaha took home the gold.
At the Buffalo Kearney Fairgrounds in Kearney on Saturday, the competition was fierce in the Youth Volleyball Tournament. In the 10 and Under division, the Kearney Cats took home the gold medal. Kearney Gold dominated in the 12U division, going a perfect 5-0 in all their matches. Kearney gold also went a perfect 10-0 in all their sets. In the 14U division, SC 14 of Lincoln also recorded a perfect 5-0, and 10-0 record in the tournament.
Caleb Shaw of McCook won the 17U Footgolf competition. Other gold medals winners included
Alicia Jennings of Lincoln, and Jeremy Jennings of Lincoln. The Footgolf competition took place at Jim Ager Memorial Golf Course in Lincoln.
Plinking Pistol Shooting featured a multitude of shooting events at the Nebraska Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln. Daniel Gillespie of Omaha had an outstanding day on the range, winning three gold medals. Fredrick Chrastil of Lincoln also had a good day bringing home two gold medals.
As of now, more than 8,000 athletes are signed up to compete in the 37th annual sports festival for all Nebraskans. A full schedule of events is slated, with over 70 sports scheduled for the 2021 Games. Officials are expecting more than 10,000 participants with late-entry sports and team-roster additions.
