State Games Final Weekend Set
Ice Hockey, Esports Among Largest Remaining Events
Lincoln (July 22, 2021)—The final weekend of competition in the 2021 Cornhusker State Games (CSG) features action in 32 sports, including Ice Hockey, the Games’ largest sport with 855 athletes. The Ice Hockey tournament, which is named the Motto McLean Classic in honor of the Omaha Hockey icon who passed away in 2019, runs Friday through Sunday on six sheets of ice at four different Omaha rinks.
Overall, the Games’ participant count stands at 9,693 and officials expect the total to surpass 10,000 by the end of weekend with late registration or walk-in entries in 12 remaining sports. Those interested in participating or attending can find information and register at CornhuskerStateGames.com.
Esports, with 457 registered gamers so far, makes its CSG debut Friday and Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena. With on-site sign-up available, Esports officials expect the event to attract hundreds more participants, possibly enough to become the Games’ largest event in its first year.
CSG Tennis, with 273 players—its largest turnout since 2009—began earlier in the week and continues through Sunday at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln.
The Cornhusker State Games Super Retriever Series, featuring 150 of the region’s top retriever dogs and their handlers, runs today through Sunday, July 25 at various locations in and around Grand Island.
Fastpitch softball, being held in Kearney for the first time, begins at 8 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday at Patriot Park, and includes an individual skills competition from 1-4 p.m. each day.
Adult indoor volleyball, with 67 teams and nearly 400 players, takes place Saturday and Sunday at Speedway Sports Complex in Lincoln.
